Welcome to the WHCC Juniors

Page last updated - 6th April 2021

W&HCC is committed to introducing cricket and hopefully creating a love for the sport into the lives of as many youngsters as possible. We encourage this by holding age specific coaching sessions, playing practice & competitive matches, encouraging team-work and developing the “spirit of cricket” across all our Junior age groups.

We also have a growing dedicated Girls section covering U8 – U14 but girls can also be integrated with the boys age groups sides. Above all, we want our Juniors to have fun, in a safe and happy atmosphere, whilst developing their sporting skills.

Children can join when they are in year 1 at school but unless an age group is full, we welcome boys and girls of any age who want to play cricket at a friendly, local club. Whilst we are currently full in boys age groups U7-13, we are always happy to take enquiries and add you/your child to our waiting list. We have limited spaces in our mixed U6 group (school year 1) and our dedicated Girls age groups from U8-14. We are also looking for players in our older Junior age groups from U14 upwards for which some previous cricketing experience would be helpful and there is a pathway through to our Senior sides in the years ahead.

The Juniors cricketing season runs from the end of April to late July. Each Junior age group is allocated a slot for or summer training on one evening each week. Girls training takes place on a Monday evening, The times and days for training will be updated shortly and comply with ECB and Government guidance on social distancing and restrictions on numbers.

Most training sessions take place at the Club’s attractive Brewery Road ground, where parents can watch their budding young cricketers exercising, while relaxing in the evening sun.

Most matches take place on Sunday mornings with some on weekday evenings. As well as at Brewery Road, we play home matches at various locations round Woking as with 20 teams in the Junior age groups from our club alone, pitches are in very high demand!

From U8 onwards, matches are played in the newly created Surrey Junior Cricket Championship playing small sided cricket matches against other local clubs. Many of our age groups have more than one team entered at different levels so that the games are as evenly matched as possible. From U10, boys start using a hardball and each year the playing conditions become more and more like adult cricket such that by U15 they are using a full-size cricket ball playing on a full-length pitch. By this time, boys and girls are encouraged where appropriate to play for the senior cricket teams at the club – it is not unknown for dads and sons to play alongside one another! Once the boy or girl is no longer a Junior, it is great if they go on to play for one of our senior sides, who play in the Surrey Championship leagues on Saturdays and have friendlies on a Sunday afternoon.

We also hold indoor winter nets and training sessions from late January for each Juniors year group which is included in the annual subs.

The WHCC Juniors section is very much a family affair and we encourage the whole family to be part of the Club.  Every Mum and Dad is invited to play an active role if they wish which may include coaching, assisting a coach, umpiring, scoring, being behind the bar or on the BBQ on a Friday evening or helping out in a host of other areas behind the scenes. Throughout the summer there is usually a Men’s 1XI or 2XI game on a Saturday at the club. Support for the team is always very welcome and the bar is usually open from late afternoon!

Our current Juniors Chairman is Paul Manly and he is supported by a team of volunteer Age Group Managers, Coaches (all of whom are DBS checked), and non-cricketing volunteers as well as a number of our own talented older Juniors who help out with the coaching of the younger age group children. Where necessary we also bring in external coaches to
supplement our training resources.
